Painting has taught me a new language. It’s already a language, understood by those who create art, which communicates but is sometimes difficult to translate. However, it is always gloriously clear. I love, and live for these moments of clarity. I think a painting can and must speak for itself. In the process of painting, the artist does a kind of dance with everything he or she observes. They sometime lead, sometime they follow. All I know is that this is how it is for me.
The observer only needs to contribute a moment of their attention and remain open to understanding. If they are pleased, they are given a peephole into the artists’ insight and imagine. The viewer can then hear and see the language of the painting. My work is always growing and changing. I try to observe new ways to look at and interpret what I see and feel.
Currently, my work is transitioning into what I call Abstract Figurative. I try to simplify detail in figures and faces, and judiciously employ whatever symbolism is appropriate. I continue to use a bright and bold color palette, creating extra interest through texture within solid areas.
Whatever my approach may be I try never to take myself or my work too seriously. I’m in it for the fun. I hope it shows.
